Preparing SS3 students for the JAMB CBT: a term-by-term plan

The SchoolEasy team · · 7 min read

Draft. This post is waiting for review. Search engines don’t index it, and it isn’t in the feed until it’s published.

Every year, capable students lose UTME marks to the format, not the content. They’ve studied, but they’ve never answered a timed paper on a computer, never navigated between questions with a mouse, and never felt how fast two hours goes across four subjects. Schools can close that gap with a steady plan that starts well before SS3’s Second Term.

SS2 Third Term: make the computer normal

Start with short, low-stakes CBT quizzes in class subjects. The goal is familiarity: logging in, reading a question on screen, choosing an option, moving on, and submitting. Ten-minute quizzes once a week are enough. Students who struggle with the mouse or keyboard show up early, while there’s time to help.

SS3 First Term: practise past questions by topic

Past questions work best by topic, not by year, at first. A student who gets three logarithm questions wrong in a row has found something specific to fix. Set weekly practice in each UTME subject, and have students read the explanation for every question they miss.

  • Use of English for everyone, every week, because every candidate takes it.
  • Each student’s three other UTME subjects, matched to their intended course.
  • A short review in class of the topics most students got wrong.

SS3 Second Term: full timed mock exams

Once students are comfortable, run full mock exams under real conditions: four subjects, one sitting, the clock running, and no going back after submission. Run at least three mocks before the UTME window, spaced a few weeks apart, so students can see their scores move.

Track weak topics, not just total scores

A total score tells you who is struggling. Topic-level results tell you why. Review each student’s weakest topics after every mock, and set their next week’s practice on exactly those topics. Share progress with parents so revision continues at home.

Look after the practical details

  • Check that your ICT lab’s computers, power supply, and internet can handle a full class at once.
  • Teach students to manage time: answer what they know first, then return to the hard questions.
  • Remind students and parents of registration deadlines and the documents they need.
